To the Campus Community:
I am pleased to report that the Rutgers Board of Governors has approved the development of a Writers House and an Alumni House on the Rutgers–Camden.
These projects, which were approved during the board’s scheduled meeting at Rutgers–Camden on Friday, Dec. 14, represent significant growth for our campus. Both will serve as critical hubs of activity for our community, while enhancing our ever-growing ability to draw students and alumni to Rutgers–Camden and visitors to our host city.
The Writers House will be located at 305 Cooper Street, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building will be renovated with great care to accentuate the striking elements crafted by its renowned architect, Wilson Eyre Jr. 305 Cooper Street is part of the cultural history of both our city and our region and, as such, it is most fitting that the renovated building will provide a physical focus for our new Writers House, which will build upon the strengths of our English faculty, our undergraduate and graduate programs in English, and our master of fine arts program in creative writing. The Writers House will help to attract students, guests, faculty, and top authors to our campus, and will serve as a home for the Department of English.
Similarly, 312 Cooper Street will be renovated to become a vibrant site for the Rutgers Alumni House, which will provide Rutgers graduates with a warm and welcoming center. The facility formerly served as the headquarters for the American Red Cross of Camden County, and it is entirely appropriate that these renovations will restore this important property to a life of service for our graduates and our community. Offices for the alumni relations and development staffs also will be located at this site.
The construction process will begin during the summer of 2013. The Alumni House is scheduled to open toward the middle of 2014, while the Writers House should be completed by July 2015. In both instances, we shall undertake renovations with the utmost respect for the historical significance of each building. Upon completion, Rutgers will have added two buildings to the growing vibrancy of our community.
These projects, combined with the opening of the student residential facility at 330 Cooper Street, send a clear signal of continued growth for Rutgers–Camden and the University District. I look forward to working with you to sustain this momentum.
