A competitive applicant will be someone with:

  • A record of academic achievement, including a high cumulative GPA, strong standardized test scores, and a demonstrated curricular plan.
  • A robust extracurricular resume, including a record of volunteer and community service experiences, extracurricular leadership, internships, and independent research.
  • Sustained, meaningful relationships with mentors; these individuals will serve as recommenders in your application(s).
  • A demonstrated ability to plan proactively, including strategic coursework selection, timely completion of appropriate courses, and an awareness of appropriate deadlines.

To provide students with the best possible experience and competitive edge, we ask all students complete our Pre-Advising Form and plan to meet with our office. This process encourages students to consider the purpose of their application and will provide us with the information needed to assist.

Students who submit the Pre-Advising Form will be contacted via email to schedule an advising meeting to discuss interest in fellowships and related developmental programs. Prior to the advising meeting, students will be asked to provide an emailed (attachment) copy of their resume/CV.

In preparation for an advising meeting, students are asked to:

  • Review the full range of opportunities.
  • Review the eligibility requirements and application instructions of fellowships/scholarships you intend to pursue very carefully. Our meeting time will be tailored to your specific goals and interests, so please come prepared.
  • Be prepared to discuss your interests and your goals clearly; if you’re still exploring, please be mindful that we will be considering awards for no sooner than the next calendar year
