Tourism and Globalization

Reaction Paper #1
Relating to Tourism: Academic Themes and Personal Experience

Write a paper of 4-6 pages evaluating the theoretical themes, concepts and arguments contained in the readings for the weeks of January 17 and Feb 3 (especially the former) in terms of your own personal experience. What themes, concepts and arguments seem the most valuable to you, based on your own observations and experience of being a tourist (in the various possible meanings of this term)? Which seem off the mark or less valuable to you? In answering these questions you should explain the ideas you discuss, showing your understanding of them, and you should make clear arguments backed up with analysis and evidence. In the process of doing this, you should address each of the readings assigned for January 27th, and whichever of the readings for February 3rd that seem relevant to the points you want to make.

As with most issues in liberal studies, there are no right or wrong answers. What I will be looking for is mastery of the material and the ability to make compelling arguments and interpretations.

Please keep quotations to a minimum and cite sources as appropriate. You may use whatever citation format you prefer, but please do so consistently, including full references. You are welcome to bring in relevant additional sources.

Bring your paper to hand in on February 3rd, and come prepared to discuss the key conclusions in your paper (we will go around the room).
