Reading Discussion
Questions 1. Let's start our discussion with Bruner's engaging article on Elmina Castle in Ghana. Why is there conflict over how the history of the castle should be represented and how the castle should be maintained? What are the various interested groups and how do their perceptions differ? Who should "own" the castle? What have been tourism's impacts? 2. Let's then turn to the article and book chapter by Gable and Handler about Colonial Williamsburg. Why do they Williamsburg a "Republican Disneyland"? What do they mean by counterposing "constructivism" and "essentialism," and how does this relate to their critique of Colonial Williamsburg? What do they feel that the museum fails to do? How does Williamsburg preoccupation with "authenticity" play itself out? 3. Kirshenblatt-Gimblett is similarly rather critical of both Ellis Island and Plimoth Plantation. What is the basis of her critique of these two examples of heritage tourism? Drawing on Urry's chapter, what is the nature of Hewison's critique of heritage? What is Urry's view? As noted in my email, the two-part Ruffins series on the politics of three museum projects is recommended but not required. I found that Part 1 was missing some pages at the end, so I've posted a new (complete) version at the WebCT website. We will be viewing the film, Cannibal Tours, in class (77 minutes).
