Thinking
About PowerPoint
Edward R.
Tufte, PowerPoint
is Evil (Wired Magazine, Sept. 2003). Even more highly recommended--the
most stimulating read on the subject I know--is Tufte's The
Cognitive Style of PowerPoint (not available online, but costs
only $7)
Tom Roklin,
PowerPoint
is Not Evil (problems yes, but pedagogically-useful possibilities
nonetheless)
Seth Godin,
Really
BAD PowerPoint (and how to avoid it). Good
advice that is "simple, effective and difficult. You'll resist
at first." Can also be ordered from Godin's website.
Steven J.
Bell, "End
PowerPoint Dependency Now!" American Libraries (June/July
2004)
University
of Minnesota Center for Teaching and Learning Services Tutorial:
Active
Learning with PowerPoint. Basic tutorial available as (talking
head) streaming videos and as text, in addition to other resources.
Although the term "lecture" is employed, what is being
proposed here are techniques with the potential to transform the
traditional lecture into an interactive classroom experience.
(Too bad the videos don't employ these techniques, but they are
still useful.)
