Education and the Development of Nations (3) [Spring, 2001] Core Examination After the completion of the first 24 GDPPA credits, a student must notify the Department to make arrangements to take the next scheduled core examination. This exam tests a student’s knowledge of material contained in the seven "core of common knowledge" courses: 501: Foundations of Policy Analysis503: Law and Public Policy 505: Organizational Behavior 515: Intro to Public Finance and Budgeting (Public Mgt./International Concentration) or 520: Health Care Financial Management (Health Care Concentration) 525: Principles of Mgt. in the Public Sector (Public Mgt./International Concentration) or 552: Principles of Health Care Management (Health Care Concentration) 535: Research Methods (Public Mgt./International Concentration) or another approved analytic methods elective (Health Care Concentration) 536: Public Information Systems (Public Mgt./International Concentration) or 538: Health Care Information Systems (Health Care Concentration) The Core Examination is organized around three areas of competence:
For Public Management and Health Care Management Concentration students, the core examination is offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall Core Exam is administered during the second week of October with a review study session scheduled two weeks prior to the exam. The Spring Core Exam is administered during the second week of February with a review study session scheduled two weeks prior to the exam. International students must take the Core Exam before leaving for overseas placement. The International Development Concentration Core Exam is scheduled within one week after completion of the Spring semester. Examples of Past Core Examinations: Pi Alpha Alpha Pi Alpha Alpha (PAA) is the national honorary society for the field of public affairs and administration. Those universities and colleges that are members of National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration [NASPAA] are eligible to establish a PAA Chapter. The purpose of PAA is to encourage and recognize accomplishment in public affairs and administration, foster integrity, professionalism and effective performance in the conduct of government and related public service activities. Established in 1974, the society has grown significantly: currently there are over 117 local chapters nation-wide with about 22,000 inductees. Pi Alpha Alpha Student Manuscript Award Each year, NASPAA sponsors the Pi Alpha Alpha Student Manuscript Award. Competition is open to anyone who was a public administration student during the current academic year, including June graduates. Two prizes are awarded -- one for best Master's-level paper and one for best Doctoral-candidate paper. Entries are judged on the basis of relevance of the topic, appropriate use of methodology, quality of presentation, originality, innovativeness, clarity and academic quality. The two awards include a plaque and a check for $200. The spirit of this journal is to showcase individual manuscripts as
submitted to us by students. The formats and styles vary from author to
author, and minimal stylistic editing is done by the journal.
