ASKED QUESTIONS
What StoryQuarterly Is Looking For:
We are interested in literary fiction, including short stories, short shorts, and novel excerpts up to 8,000 words in length. We do not publish flash fiction and are not now seeking unsolicited essays or creative non-fiction but are open to queries from writers interested in conducting interviews with established authors. As always it helps to study the magazine. We select fiction on the basis of style, originality, craft, meaningfulness, and a strong narrative design from beginning to end. Much of what we publish is by emerging writers.
How To Submit:
All work must be submitted electronically through our submissions portal at http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/storyquarterly/submissions.php. We no longer accept submissions by surface mail and automatically discard paper submissions and items emailed directly to the editors. Upon entering our main page, writers should follow the simple directions. First-time users must sign up in order to log in and submit work. Decisions can be tracked electronically directly on the site. Submissions can be uploaded as MSWord documents (.doc, .docx, .rtf) or as Adobe .pdf files or can be pasted in as ordinary text files, though we do not recommend this and prefer attached files.
After entering your submission you will receive an email acknowledging that your work has arrived. Be sure to whitelist our email address (story.quarterly@camden.rutgers.edu) to prevent the acknowledgment from ending in your spam folder.
When to Submit:
We are now accepting submissions until 1 May, at which time our electronic portal will be closed until 1 September.
Simultaneous Submissions:
We welcome simultaneous submissions but expect contributors to notify us immediately if work is accepted elsewhere. Writers whose work is accepted elsewhere are expected to withdraw their work immediately by logging in to their SQ account and need not notify the editors in doing so.
Reporting Time:
Reporting time is normally four to six months. Given occasional backlogs, potentially successful contributors may experience additional delays. Our annual print edition appears in the fall of each year. We are constantly updating StoryQuarterly Online.
Payment:
We normally pay between $150 and $200 for contributors to our print or our online editions. We offer a standard contract for first North American serial rights. StoryQuarterly publishes work either in its annual print edition or on StoryQuarterly Online, and sometimes in both formats.
Contest Entries:
We begin accepting entries for our Annual Fiction Contest in June of each year, with the contest closing in August.
