Urban studies students learn how to analyze contemporary problems of urban society and city life to find sustainable solutions. Courses help students understand urban institutions and how they function in the American political system and the global economy. Through a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, the program prepares students for both graduate study and careers in private, nonprofit, and government-based urban service for cities and counties.

Dual Degree Program (BA/MPA)

Urban studies majors interested in graduate school should consider applying to the B.A./M.P.A. dual degree program during the spring term of their junior year. Qualified students can earn an undergraduate degree in economics and a master of public administration degree within five years by taking two graduate-level courses during their senior year. These two courses fulfill undergraduate and major requirements and are billed at the undergraduate tuition rate.

Highlights

  • In fall 2011, the urban studies program unveiled a new curriculum including an introductory course "Camden and the Greater Philadelphia Region," which engages students in applied action research in their host community.
  • The curriculum is flexible, so students can tailor courses to meet their interests and goals.
  • The program director will meet with students individually to answer questions and address needs.
  • Graduates pursue careers and graduate school in community planning, nonprofit administration, and government administration.
