History students at Rutgers–Camden have a chance to study with professors who are on the cutting edge of scholarship. The Department of History consists of professors who are equally committed to education and to research. These scholars not only teach courses in history and politics, but also society, popular culture, minorities, military affairs, and business. By deepening the understanding of such issues, the history program serves to sharpen each student’s skills for their careers and for a variety of graduate programs.

Dual Degree Program (BA/MA)

History majors considering graduate study in history should consider applying for the BA/MA dual degree program during the spring term of their junior year. Qualified students can earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years by taking two graduate-level courses during their senior year. These two courses count as fulfilling undergraduate and major requirements in American history and are billed at the undergraduate tuition rate.

Highlights

  • Class size of core courses, which every history major must take, are kept small so that each student can work with their professor.
  • Department of History professors publish in respected journals and win prestigious awards.  So do their students:  research by undergraduate Melissa McHugh was published and featured by the online journal Student Pulse.

Faculty Highlights

  • Dr. Jacob Soll, a John Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, published The Information Master: Jean-Baptiste Colbert’s Secret State Intelligence System (University of Michigan Press, 2009).
