A national leader in the growing field of childhood studies program, Rutgers–Camden focuses its research and teaching on the issues, concepts, and debates that surround the study of children and childhoods. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the curriculum provides students with a strong background in both humanistic and social science perspectives on children. This approach prepares students for careers in many areas, including social services, youth programming, education, and public policy.

Childhood studies has emerged as a prominent field that is transforming research on children. Only a handful of undergraduate and master’s degree programs in childhood studies exist, and Rutgers–Camden is the first in the nation to offer a PhD in childhood studies.
