Students gain both an understanding of the various areas of biological sciences and valuable lab experience in the biology program at Rutgers–Camden. As a component of the major, undergraduate students in their junior or senior year have the opportunity to work on a research project alongside a faculty member of their choice while receiving academic experience for their hands-on experiences. Students have performed research funded through National Science Foundation grants, including studies on the New Jersey Pinelands and biofuel technology.

Equipped with research-quality instrumentation, the teaching and research laboratories enable students to perform physiological, molecular, ecological, and environmental experiments while gaining important lab experience for graduate study and their careers.

Dual Degree Program (BA/MS)

Biology majors interested in graduate school should consider applying to the BA/MS dual degree program during the spring term of their junior year. Qualified students can earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years by taking two graduate-level courses during their senior year. These two courses fulfill undergraduate and major requirements and are billed at the undergraduate tuition rate.

Faculty Highlights

  • Dr. Kwangwon Lee recently received a $625,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for his work on characterizing the genetic basis of circadian rhythms. He studies the fungus Neurospora as a model organism.
  • Dr. Dan Shain, who has been featured on the Discovery Channel and has received funding from NASA, recently edited a book about his research specialty, leeches, with a leading scientific publisher. The book is Annelids in Modern Biology (Wiley-Blackwell). With Dr. Nir Yakoby, Dr. Shain is working to develop a freezable fruit fly to extend organ donor shelf life. Read more here.
  • Dr. Joseph Martin is the director of the Center for Computational and Integrative Biology. He also directs the very first doctoral program in the sciences on the Rutgers–Camden Campus: the Ph.D. program in computational and integrative technology, an interdisciplinary study of biological systems that applies analytical methods from mathematics and computer science to tools from traditional biomedical disciplines.
  • Students who complete the biology major also fulfill the minimum requirements for pre-medicine, pre-veterinary medicine, and pre-dentistry studies.
