Students in the African American studies program at Rutgers–Camden receive a broad and varied exposure to black culture, economics, politics, and history both nationally and internationally, with a focus on North America. In this interdisciplinary major, professors from several departments teach innovative courses in literature, religion, dance, art, sociology, anthropology and history about the African experience in America. Many African American studies majors choose to go directly into the workplace after graduation, while other graduates pursue graduate school in such diverse areas as African American studies, public administration, business, social work, and law.

Highlights

  • Dr. Wayne Glasker, an associate professor of history, authored the book Black Students in the Ivory Tower (University of Massachusetts Press) and contributed to the Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Dr. Keith Green, an assistant professor of English, won a Lindback Minority Fellowship for Faculty Advancement in the amount of $15,000. The fellowship will be used in support of his current book project, “Not Just Slavery: African Americans Write Captivity Narratives, Too: 1816-1879.”
