John Culbertson is president and chief investment officer for Context Asset Management and Context Capital Partners.

He is responsible for the firm’s strategic development and implementation of investment strategy.  Culbertson also serves as chair of the investment committee.  Context Asset Management delivers cutting-edge alternative investment strategies to help investors reach their financial goals and plan their future.  Context Capital Partners is a seeding firm focused on alternative investment strategies in the hedge fund, liquid alternatives mutual fund, and private equity fund markets.  Since its inception, seed deals led by Context have totaled approximately $300 million.  In 2013, Context launched Context Summits to connect investors and fund managers in the alternative asset industry.

Prior to joining Context, Culbertson ran the investment committee and was chief investment officer for a family office where he oversaw a portfolio of hedge funds and was responsible for asset allocation decisions.  In addition to his family office background, Culbertson was a founder of Gamma Investors, a venture capital fund that invested in financial services technology companies.

Culbertson spent the early years of his career in New York and London as a partner at Cooper Neff and Associates, a quantitative proprietary trading firm.  In 1995, that firm was sold in BNP Paribas, where Culbertson became an executive vice president, a position he held until 2000.

He is the chair of the board of directors at UrbanPromise, an innovative urban youth organization headquartered in Camden that strives to equip Camden’s children and young adults with the skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, and spiritual growth.  UrbanPromise offers after-school programs, summer camps, two schools, experiential learning, job training, and many other offerings that challenge youth to develop and realize their potential.

Culbertson is a member of the Dean's Leadership Council at the Rutgers School of Business–Camden. He earned a master of liberal arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania.  He has been married for 26 years and has four daughters.
