Non-Profit
Organizations
Here is a list of some of the major non-profit groups
working within the planning sector
ARNOVA is The Association
for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action. It is
an international, interdisciplinary network of scholars and nonprofit
leaders fostering the creation, application and dissemination
of research on voluntary action, nonprofit organizations,
philanthropy and civil society. It is the major research organization
in the field. Members of the department such as Professor Jon Van
Til have been active in the organization. He also writes a regular
column in Non-Profit Times,
perhaps the leading trade magazine for non-profits.
Independent Sector is a
national leadership forum, working to encourage philanthropy, volunteering,
not-for-profit initiative and citizen action that help us better
serve people and communities. It promotes the general welfare of
all its citizens and encourages active citizen participation, preserves
basic freedoms and fosters collaboration and partnerships among
government, business, the independent sector and communities. It
is an independent sector that is recognized for its effectiveness,
responsiveness, openness and accountability. It is an organization
that provides leadership toward accomplishing this vision of society
and the sector.
The National Housing Institute is
a 24-year old independent nonprofit organization that examines
the issues causing the crisis in housing and community in America.
NHI examines the key issues affecting affordable housing and community
development practitioners and their supporters. These issues include
housing, jobs, safety, and education, with an emphasis on housing
and economic development, as well as poverty and racism, disinvestment
and lack of employment, and breakdown of the social fabric.
