RUTGERS UNIVERSITY - POLITICAL SCIENCE

CAREERS

Rutgers-Camden political science majors have successfully followed a number of different career paths. These options include: law degrees, graduate study in political science; professional degrees in public administration and public policy; government service; work for political organizations or legislators at the local, state, and national levels; and teaching.

Undoubtedly, the largest single group of our students are pre-law. Although there is no requirement that law applicants major in a particular field of study, historically political science attracts a huge proportion of students who intend to pursue their juris doctor degree. At Rutgers-Camden, Dr. G. Alan Tarr of the Political Science Department is the campus pre-law advisor and teaches most of our law-related courses. (click here for more information on pre-law studies).

Political science majors also go on to further study at the graduate level. Our students have been accepted to some of the most prestigious Ph.D. programs in the country, including Yale and NYU. A significant number enroll in professional programs to attain masters degrees in public administration or public policy as an avenue to higher level government positions. Beginning in September of 1998 we instituted a Five-Year BA/MPA Program here at Rutgers-Camden in conjunction with our nationally accredited Graduate Department of Public Policy and Administration. Under this highly selective program, outstanding students will be able to attain both a BA in Political Science and an MPA from the Graduate Department in five years.

Students with a major in political science also have successfully embarked on careers upon graduation. Among our graduates we count public school teachers in the South Jersey region, political party workers, staff for members of Congress and the New Jersey legislature, and public servants at the county and municipal level. Students prepare for these positions not simply through their coursework, but also by exploring government and the political system first hand and making valuable contacts through internships or our course on Practical Politics.

What all of these individuals share, along with our students who are interested primarily in a high quality liberal arts education, is an undergraduate experience in which they have the opportunity to work closely with individual faculty members in meeting academic challenges and in planning the best way to apply their education after graduation.
