PARADIGMS (For German 101)

1. The definite article.

masculine neuter feminine plural
nominative  der  das die die
accusative  den das die die
dative  --------- ---------- ---------- ---------
genitive  ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------

2. The ein-wordparadigm, shown through the indefinite article, with kein in the plural.

masculine neuter feminine plural
nominative  ein ein eine keine
accusative  einen ein eine keine
dative  --------- ---------- ---------- ---------
genitive  ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------

3. The ein-word endings.

masculine neuter feminine plural
nominative  --e --e
accusative  --en --e --e
dative  --------- ---------- ---------- ---------
genitive  ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------

To create a form of any ein-word, just add the endings to the stem. Ein-words are ein, kein, and the possessive adjectives--mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, and euer. There is no need to separately memorize a table like #2 for each ein-word, although it might be useful to do that while studying. (In the online version of this handout, you can click on each of the above ein-words to see all its forms.)

4. The personal pronouns.

Nominative Accusative
first person singular ich mich
second person singular (familiar) du dich
third person singular masculine er ihn
third person singular neuter es es
third person singular feminine sie sie
first person plural wir uns
second person plural (familiar) ihr euch
third person plural sie sie
second person formal (singular and plural) Sie Sie
