The General Science major is intended for students desiring a broad knowledge of the biological, physical, and mathematical sciences. The program allows a student to pursue specific interests after having completed a required core of basic courses. Thus, the major accommodates the student whose interest is purely scientific as well as students interested in the relationship of science to other fields.

This major can be completed only through daytime attendance.

Students who graduate with a major in General Science often choose careers in which a broad background in science is helpful. For example, General Science students with an interest in education can be certified to teach elementary school. Students with an interest in sales find employment in pharmaceuticals or other science-related industries. Other students may use their General Science background to further their education in a more specialized science area after graduation. For additional information about employment opportunities, students should consult with the Campus Career Center.

To graduate with a major in General Science, students must complete the requirements listed in parts A, B, and C below:

A. REQUIRED COURSES
50:120:101-107 and 102-108: General Biology I and II and accompanying labs (8 credits)
50:640:130 or 50:640:121: Calculus for Life Sciences (3 cr) or Unified Calculus (4 cr)
50:160:115-125 and 50:160:116-126: Chemical Principles I & II and accompanying labs (8 cr)
50:198:105 (3 cr) or 50:198:111-112 (4 cr): Intro to Computing or Programming Fundamentals and Software Lab
50:460:101: Introduction to the Earth (3 cr)
50:750:203-205 and 50:750:204-206: General Physics I & II and accompanying labs (8 cr)
50:960:183 or 50:960:283: Elementary Applied Statistics or Intro to Statistics (3 cr)

B. EACH STUDENT MUST SELECT THREE COURSES FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

  1. BIOLOGY AREA: 3 upper level courses (of at least 3 credits, 200 level or above) OR
  2. CHEMISTRY AREA: 3 upper level courses in chemistry (of at least 3 credits, 200 level or above) OR
  3. PHYSICS AREA: 3 upper level courses in physics (of at least 3 credits, 200 level or above) OR
  4. MATHEMATICS AREA: UNIFIED CALCULUS II 640:122 and two other Math Department courses at the 200 level or above OR
  5. COMPUTER SCIENCE AREA: MATHEMATICAL FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE 198:171 and any two computer science courses that require Programming Fundamentals 198:111 as a prerequisite).

C. EACH STUDENT MUST SELECT FOUR ADDITIONAL COURSES OUTSIDE THE AREA SELECTED IN PART B
Each student must complete four (4) additional courses of at least 3 credits at the 200 level or above (except as noted below), chosen from outside the area selected in part B, above. These include any combination of courses in the natural sciences (astronomy, biological sciences, chemistry, geology, and physics), mathematics (including UNIFIED CALCULUS II 640:122), statistics, and computer science (including MATHEMATICAL FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE 198:171 or any computer science course that requires Programming Fundamentals 198:111 as a prerequisite. (All of the chosen courses must be outside the area selected in part B.)
