Admission to the Teacher Preparation Program at Rutgers-Camden requires:
-
An overall GPA of 2.80 or higher (4.0 representing A), as evidenced through a copy of most recent Rutgers transcript. No grades of "D" are acceptable for any courses required for certification. Post-baccalaureate students, see note below;
- Evidence of the following minimum scores on the Praxis I: Academic
Skills Assessments (PPSTŪ): Reading, 177; Writing, 177;
Mathematics, 175; and
- Completion of the course Fundamentals of the Teaching Profession (50:964:101) with a grade of "B" or higher
Transfer students must meet the 2.8 GPA requirement on the basis of at least 2 courses taken within the Rutgers University system.
Post-baccalaureate students must also be able to provide an official transcript from the degree granting institution(s).
Students who obtained a baccalaureate degree from Rutgers need to apply for re-enrollment through the Office of Academic Advising, not the Admissions Office.
Students who obtained a baccalaureate degree from another institution must apply through the Admissions Office and obtain a transcript evaluation of previous courses.
Special Note for Post-Baccalaureate Students: The Teacher Preparation Program will recognize an overall GPA of 2.8 from a student who possesses a baccalaureate or masters degree from a four-year institution. Post-baccalaureate students from outside institutions (i.e. non-Rutgers graduates) who have a grade-point average of less than 2.8 in their academic major are not eligible for the Teacher Preparation Program with reference to that major (since the major grade-point average cannot be adjusted). Degreed students in this situation may choose another subject matter concentration in order to pursue certification. This option does not necessarily require an additional degree or major; instead, a post-baccalaureate student needs 30 credits in a new subject area, with 12 of the credits at a junior / senior level. Rutgers graduates who do not have a 2.8 in their subject area may take additional classes to raise their major GPA. If you are in this situation, please make an appointment with us.
Returning Rutgers students will note that their grade point average is adjusted as additional courses are taken.
Once a student has met the requirements for program
admission, he/she should schedule an appointment for advisement
by calling the program secretary at 856.225.2351.
