Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When do I need to apply for admission into the TPP?

A. There is no fixed date for application to the program. However, in order to file for student teaching (which must be accomplished one full year prior to the student teaching semester) and take most professional preparation courses, it is to your benefit to apply as soon as possible. We encourage students to apply at the end of the first term of Rutgers-Camden attendance. Please visit our Admission Requirements to see what you have to do.

Q. Can courses in Education or other disciplines taken at another college be used to satisfy the requirements for certification at Rutgers-Camden?

A. Maybe. Courses needed for Common Core Requirements and the Elementary / Secondary Core Requirements (see the K-5 or K-12 Advisement Sheets for the required courses), that are accepted by the University, and possess Rutgers-Camden course equivalencies can be used to satisfy Teacher Preparation Requirements. However, the following courses must be taken at Rutgers-Camden: 50:964:101, 50:964:301 or 302; 50:350:309 or 310; 964:416; 964:450; and 964:452 as well as all K-12 Methods courses and Student Teaching (50:964:487 and 492).

Q. Will I get my bachelor's degree through the TPP?

A. No. Rutgers-Camden does not offer a degree program in Education. Your degree must in a liberal arts or science discipline. Your bachelor's degree, however, is necessary before the State of New Jersey Department of Education will issue you a license to teach. (Please refer to next question).

Q. Are there any requirements for certification beyond student teaching?

A. Yes! The State of New Jersey requires passing score(s) on the appropriate PRAXIS II test(s). Foreign language certification candidates must also pass an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

Q. When should I take the PRAXIS II test? What test(s) do I need to take?

A. You should take the PRAXIS II test as soon as you feel your subject-area knowledge has prepared you to succeed. The State of New Jersey requires specific tests for each area of certification. Click here to access this list.

Q. What role does the Teacher Preparation Program play in the Praxis II test program?

A. Taking the Praxis II is a matter between the student, State of New Jersey and ETS. The Rutgers- Camden TPP does not engage in registration or collection of monies, nor does it have anything to do with the administration of the tests.

Q. Where do I obtain information about the PRAXIS test?

A. Please contact ETS (Educational Testing Service) directly.

Q. How do I sign up for a Practicum course?

A. You cannot register for a Practicum course until you are officially enrolled in the TPP and have successfully filed a student teaching application. Please refer to "Policies and Procedures" and Course Information for more information about Practicum.

Q. I am majoring in Accounting or Nursing, and I would also like to be certified as an elementary teacher. Is this possible?

A. Not with these majors. New Jersey requires that all teacher certification applicants complete a 60 credits in liberal arts or, if already degreed, a 30 credit liberal arts concentration. Please refer to Admission Requirements for a more detailed explanation of the requirements for post- baccalaureate certification.

Q. I am a transfer or post- baccalaureate student. How long will it take me to complete my certification program?

A. This question can only be answered on an individual basis, after a transfer credit evaluation has been done. Many factors come into play, such as acceptable transfer credits, willingness to take summer/winter courses, and availability of courses/field placements.

Q. I am a junior or a senior, and I have not taken any Teacher Preparation courses. Can I enroll in the program now, graduate with my class, and re-enroll to complete the certification program?

A. Yes! You may graduate when you have completed all degree requirements. The following semester, you can re-enroll, and complete the certification requirements. Be sure to contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss your options.

Q. I am an undergraduate student, and I have completed all of the Teacher Preparation courses except student teaching. I want to graduate with my class. May I return to complete student teaching?

A. Yes! Be sure to contact the Financial Aid office to discuss your options and ensure that you make the best decision. You will also need to re-enroll. Please consult an advisor in Academic Advising (Student Life Office) to initiate this process several months prior to your graduation. Be attentive to issues of health coverage and personal injury/accidental insurance.

Q. My grades have slipped since I first applied to the program. May I still file a student teaching application, and work towards the required minimum 2.8 GPA during the time between my original application and student teaching placement?

A. No. You must maintain an overall minimum GPA of 2.8. The Teacher Preparation Program will not accept student teaching applications from students who do not meet the minimum overall GPA requirements (i.e. students in "limbo"). If your major GPA is not at or above a 2.8 at the time of submission of the student teaching application, you will have until the semester prior to student teaching to raise it. If it is not at the required minimum of 2.8 by the semester prior to student teaching, your application will be forfeited and you will have to reapply for a later semester.

Q. Does Rutgers-Camden offer certification in Special Education?

A. No. Nor do we offer certification in Physical Education, ESL, Primary (P-3) or Business Education at this time.

Q. My finances are tight. Should I work or take courses during the semester of student teaching?

A. Student teaching is a full semester of full-time work in an actual classroom under the supervision of a cooperating teacher and a university supervisor. You will teach or observe the entire school day and must also be available for after school activities as required by your cooperating teacher. We recommend that you concentrate fully on your student teaching and not assume new commitments or responsibilities during this crucial time.

Q. Will I be placed close to my home for student teaching?

A. You will be placed within a reasonable radius of Rutgers-Camden. We do not guarantee that geographical preferences can be accommodated.

Q. Should I try to secure my own practicum or student teaching placements?

A. No. Under no circumstances is it appropriate for the student to do or to say anything that might work against the integrity of the teacher preparation program office and its staff. We will place you within our established network of partner schools. You may make requests of us. However, please do not attempt to arrange your own placements.

Q. My major is English and my minor is Spanish. Can I be certified to teach both?

A. You must have at least 30 credits in the minor (of which 12 are at the 300 level or higher), and achieve a passing score on the PRAXIS test in both subjects.

Q. Does Rutgers-Camden offer "alternate route" certification?

A. No, we do not. You need to contact the New Jersey Department of Education to find information on this type of certification.
