BSB Data Electronics Installation (Network) Downtime on August 20, 21, 27 & 28:
TD Network Operations has scheduled the BSB Data Electronics installation for the following dates.
Work will begin early each morning and network connectivity can not be guaranteed until later in the afternoon on each of these days.
BSB: 3rd and 4th Floor, Monday and Tuesday (August 20, 21)
On 8/20 and 8/21 - All BSB 3rd and 4th floor switches will be replaced. Network connectivity will be unavailable in all locations on those floors until work is complete.
BSB: 1st and 2nd Floor, Monday and Tuesday (August 27, 28)
On 8/27 and 8/28 - All switches servicing the 1st and 2nd floors of the BSB will be replaced. All of the servers operated by Camden Computing Services are located
on the 1st floor of BSB, however most of these servers have already been placed onto a switch that will remain online throughout the data electronics installation process.
The campus email, web, DNS, Radius and other services should remain available. All of the public labs, classrooms, and offices on the 1st floor of BSB will experience
significant network downtime until work is complete. For this reason, the 1st floor public labs in BSB will be closed all morning on Monday, August 27th.
During the replacement of switches servicing the 2nd floor of the BSB, all labs, classrooms, and offices on that floor will experience significant network downtime.
Also, any School of Business network services such as file sharing, network printing, and SBC web sites will also be inaccessible during the 2nd floor downtime.
This work will begin early Tuesday morning and we hope to have all services restored by the afternoon.
We estimate that the outages will persist from very early in the morning until the afternoon, so please adjust your schedules accordingly if you are in an affected area or utilize
affected services. We do apologize for this inconvenience.

Web Mail Changes on 8/15/07
On Wednesday, August 15, 2007 there will be a brief (approximately 30 minutes) outage of Web Mail services beginning at 9pm. During this downtime we will be
upgrading the server software and hardware. After the upgrade, web mail will not allow an outgoing message to be addressed to more than 50 people.
Due to bulk email abuses, the web mail server will now limit outgoing messages to a maximum of 50 recipient addresses. If you need to send a message to more than 50
people, you must use a mailing list service. Rutgers operates two mailing list services, RAMS and
Mailman. This change does not affect non-web mail programs like Thunderbird, Eudora, or Outlook.

Personal Computer Purchasing Available:
As part of the current University PC Purchase Cycle program, an opportunity has been established for members of the Rutgers community to purchase computers at institutional discounts. Both Hewlett-Packard and Apple have extended their offering of Rutgers specified desktops, notebooks, displays, and upgrades to students, faculty, and staff.
Go to http://findtech.rutgers.edu/pccycle/personal for specifications, pricing, and information on how to order.
NOTE: You will need your NetID and password to access this information.
Two common questions (others listed on the web page):
How good are the discounts in the program?
Discounts fluctuate with the University's estimated volume of purchases and any number of product circumstances that only the vendors know. However, many discounts are aggressive, anywhere from 31% to more than 55% off the normal higher education prices for computer systems.
Will prices remain the same for the term of the cycle?
Prices should remain for the term of the cycle. However, the cycle is based on firm discounts, not prices. So, in theory, if the technology on the cycle becomes more economical in the marketplace, the University's prices should fall as a result.

Partial Network Shutdown June 15-17
At 4:30pm today, Friday the 15th of June, all of the network equipment in the Camden Campus Center will be shut down in preparation for a total power shutdown in that building over the weekend. We apologize for the late notice, but the scope of the shutdown was not clear until very recently.
If you work in one of the following locations, it is STRONGLY ADVISED that you save all of your work, then logout of and shutdown your computer no later than 4:15pm today:
Camden Campus Center
211 North 5th Street
All 300-400 block buildings on Cooper Street
LEAP High School
LEAP Academy
Since the network equipment supporting these locations is fed out of the Camden Campus Center it must be kept offline until this weekend's electrical work in the campus center is finished. These locations will remain offline from 4:30 pm today until approximately 10:00 am on Sunday, June 17.
If you work in the campus center, you may also want to unplug your computer from the electrical outlet or power strip. There could be damaging surges in the building power lines when power is restored.
Spam Held on RULink?: Did you receive a message indicating that spam is now being filtered and held on RULink?
Here in Camden we have been checking for spam for years, so nothing has changed on the local servers. When email gets sent to netid@camden.rutgers.edu, that message comes directly to the local server and gets spam filtered. However, when an email comes to netid@rutgers.edu, it first goes to the RULink server in New Brunswick and gets spam filtered there now. Depending on the user's settings on RULink, the email will either stay on that server or be forwarded to another email address. When RULink was established, all accounts were originally set up to forward email to netid@camden.rutgers.edu for Camden users, so the email message did not stay on the RULink server (it was simply passed to the local server and then delivered to your account). Due to an overwhelming amount of spam suddenly hitting accounts on RULink, it became necessary to start spam filtering on that system on May 29, 2007 that now creates the potential for spam to reside in the Inbox on RULink by default.
In a way, this new spam filtering also helps people who are forwarding email, because they now have 2 different spam filtering servers checking their email for spam. However, this would now require people who are forwarding email from @rutgers.edu to @camden.rutgers.edu to check two locations for spam.
If you desire to return the mail processing where all mail is automatically delivered through RULink to camden, you would perform the following one time change:
go to : http://rulink.rutgers.edu/admin
Login with your NetID and password
Click the "Spam Control" link
Choose "no spam processing"
Click the "Change" button
This will put your RULink account back to the way it was, where only Camden's email servers will spam filter your email.
NEW! Remote Student Password Recovery:
OVERVIEW
In the past, students who forgot the passwords for their Rutgers student
accounts (clam) needed to present ID at one of our facilities to get their password reset. As a convenience, the Office of Information Technology has developed a feature which allows individuals to reset their own passwords, without staff interaction, by answering a series of user-selected secret questions.
HOW YOU MAY BE AFFECTED
By default, this feature is not turned on. If you want to maximize security and believe it is unlikely you will ever forget your password, you can elect not to turn this feature on. On the other hand, if you want the convenience of resetting your password on your own in case you do forget it, you will want to turn the remote password recovery feature on.
DETAILS
If you turn this feature on, you will be prompted to provide answers to three questions of your choice from a predefined list. These questions and answers will be associated with your account. After this, if you later forget your password, you will be able to set a new password on your own by supplying the same answers to the selected questions.
You will need to decide whether it makes sense to turn this feature on, given your own personal circumstances. It is a matter of choosing between the convenience of easily resetting a forgotten password against the lessened security of associating possibly-guessable questions with entry into your account. Someone who is a distance learner and can not easily get to our Help Desk to get a password changed has different needs than someone who visits our computer labs on a regular basis.
For more advice on whether to turn the remote password recovery feature on, and to get directions on how to do so, visit the webpage:
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/rpr/
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Help Desk at 856-225-6274.
RUNet Service Down in Apartments on 6/6/07:
Power will be disconnected to the router ar01-cama-bsb at or about 7AM on 6/6/07. The electrical panel will be replaced. A temporary power source will be run into Apartments Residence Hall to supply power during this panel work. The plan is to down the router, plug it back into the temp power source and bring it back up. Thus, RUNet service to the entire building will be down for a short period of time while the router reboots. Once the panel is installed, there will also be a short down time to move it back over to the original power outlets. The time scheduled to do the move back over is around noon on 6/6/07. Thus, another short period of time while the router reboots on the ER power again.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and wish to inform you that outages such as this one will occur again over the course of the summer.
Graduates Keep Computer Account for 1 Year: All Rutgers Alumni Accounts/NetID's (email in particular) will automatically remain open for 1 year after the date of completion of graduation requirements. As the end of the 1 year extension nears, you will receive email reminding you that your account will be closed and you should back up any personal files that you wish to save. At this time, you should also consider forwarding your mail to another email address and let people know that your email address is changing.
You will not be able to extend your Alumni Account/NetID any longer. If you still wish to have internet access, it might be best to contact a local Internet Service Provider or go with one of the commercial services such as America Online or Yahoo.
OIT Requests for Required Software Installation in the Computing Services Labs:
Faculty members who require a specific software application to be available on public lab PCs for the Summer or Fall '07 semesters should bring the software to Camden Computing Services no later than May 1, 2007 for the Summer semesters and no later than August 1, 2007 for the Fall semester. Due to the time required to load and test new software on all systems in the labs, sufficient time must be allowed prior to the start of each semester in order to fulfill your requests.
Software presented later than these dates may not be able to be successfully installed for the start of classes.
Account Deletions on Clam and Crab for Spring 2007
Electronic mail has been sent to accounts which have been marked as "no longer current Rutgers faculty, students or staff" as determined by our data base. Crab and Clam accounts will be closed on April 26, 2007. We ask that these account holders move their files to new systems before this date, or save them to a floppy disk. The checking of accounts is an automated procedure performed with the computer systems every semester on all campuses of Rutgers. This list of clam and crab accounts that are to be deleted is posted below for your review. If your account is listed, it is scheduled for closing.
Clam Account Deletion List
Crab Account Deletion List
If your name is on this list and you feel that you are still a valid student/staff/faculty member, please send us E-mail before the above dates with your FULL first name, last name, and account name to:
rohrman@camden.rutgers.edu
We will then manually check further on the status of your account and will respond back to you personally via E-mail.
Note...if you are a student who is not taking courses this semester, then your account has to be closed. No exceptions. You can reopen your account, using the normal makeacct procedure, as soon as you start attending classes again.
There are many commercial providers of Internet access such as Prodigy, CompuServe, and America-Online whose fees are reasonable. There are many local firms also that provide Internet access (called ISPs). Check your phone book or newspapers for their advertisements.
