OIT-Camden Fall Semester Hours of Operation:
Computing Services Camden will begin Fall Semester Hours of Operation on the first day of the Semester, 9/5/06. Please go to the following web page for info. concerning the hours in each of the labs on campus: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/hours.php
Requests for Required Software Installation in the Computing Services Labs:
Faculty members who require a specific software application to be available on public lab PCs for the Fall 2006 semester should bring the software to Camden Computing Services no later than August 23, 2006. Due to the time required to load and test new software in the labs, and the time spent by Computing Services staff on their routine responsibilities, sufficient time must be allowed prior to the start of the Fall semester in order to fulfill your requests.
Computing Services is unable to guarantee the installation of any software presented later than this date.
We appreciate your cooperation.
Interim Hours of Operation:Computing Services labs in the Business & Science will be open as follows, from 8/17/06 thru 9/4/06:
Monday thru Thursday: 8 am to 6 pm
Friday: 8 am to 5 pm
Saturday & Sunday: CLOSED
CLOSED Monday, 9/4/06 for Labor Day Holiday. Extended Hours of Operation will resume on Tuesday, 9/5/06, the first day of the Fall '06 Semester.
Computing Services Outage (7/23/06):
At approximately 6:15pm the air conditioning system that cools the server room in the Business & Science Building failed. Shortly afterwards
the server room lost power and by 7:00pm the power outage had exceeded the capacity of our battery backups. At that time we were forced to power
down all of our campus server systems. By 8:30pm partial cooling and power had been restored to the server room. As of 9:00pm essential services
such as email, DNS, DHCP, and web had been restored. Until the air conditioning system is fully repaired, some servers will remain offline. This
may affect some of our public labs during the day on Monday. UPDATE: As of 7/26/06 we continue to run essential service systems only, while waiting
for repairs to the air conditioning.
Computing Services Closed 7/4/06:
Computing Services will be closed on Independence Day, Tuesday, July 4, 2006. Normal Hours of Operation will resume on Wednesday, 7/5/06.
Final Reminder: Transition from TN3270 Client to QWS3270 Secure Client for RUTADMIN:
Please be advised that the cutoff date to convert from the unsecure TN3270 client to a secure client (e.g. QWS3270 Secure) has been pushed back three days to Thursday, June 22, 2006. If you have not converted before this date, access to RUTADMIN will be denied.
Please consult your departmental computing support person before making any changes to your computer. The following link will bring you to the instructions for downloading and installing the new secure client.

FTP Software Decommission:
On September 30, 2006, Camden Computing Services will decommission the
insecure ftp protocol and will support, in its place, the secure sftp
protocol (which has been in place for a couple of years). ftp is
insecure since it does not encrypt any data nor passwords over the
network, while sftp (secure ftp) does. What does this mean to you?
a. If you use the command "ftp" to transfer files, you need to use the "sftp" command.
b. If you are using webdrive, which uses ftp internally, you need to
upgrade to the latest version of webdrive (7.1) and configure it to use
sftp.
c. If you publish web pages with a tool like Netscape/Mozilla Composer,
you will not be able to use the Publish button, but must create the
files locally on your PC and copy them to the server using the above
methods. If you are a Dreamweaver user, you should think about
upgrading to the latest version of Dreamweaver
which does support sftp.
More information on sftp can be found at:
http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/HELP/General/sftp.html
If you have questions or concerns with the above, please see your
departmental computer/IT staff (UCS), or contact our help desk:
help@camden.rutgers.edu

SOFTWARE CHANGES IN PUBLIC LABS (Mozilla and WebDrive):
Camden Computing Services will be making some changes this summer to the Campus public labs with regards to the following software:
a. The Mozilla Suite of software is being decommissioned on all platforms (removed), since this software is no longer supported by its developer (mozilla.org). We will still have the individual web browser (Mozilla Firefox) and email reader (Mozilla Thunderbird) available. For a web composer tool, we will be making available a web authoring system called "Nvu" on our PC and Mac platforms. This tool is very similar to the web composer tool in the Mozilla Suite and also has some more advanced eatures.
b. webdrive will be upgraded to version 7.1 on the PCs in the public labs. This version has better security features and supports "sftp" for secure (encryption) passing of information.
We encourage all users of the above software at home, to upgrade to the latest versions described above. (For office systems, your departmental IT support staff will handle your systems as usual).
Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox can be found at:
http://www.mozilla.com/
Nvu can be found at:
http://www.nvu.com
The latest webdrive (7.10.1460) can be found at:

Account Deletions on Clam and Crab for Spring 2006
Electronic mail has been sent to accounts which have been marked as "no longer current Rutgers faculty, students or staff" as determined by our data base. Crab and Clam accounts will be closed on April 24, 2006. We ask that these account holders move their files to new systems before this date, or save them to a floppy disk. The checking of accounts is an automated procedure performed with the computer systems every semester on all campuses of Rutgers. This list of clam and crab accounts that are to be deleted is posted below for your review. If your account is listed, it is scheduled for closing.
