Armitage Hall Wireless Network
Camden Computing Services has begun the installation of a building wide wireless network in Armitage Hall. You may notice blue Linksys wireless access points being installed high on walls throughout the building. These access points will not provide network access until all of the hardware has been installed. Wireless accss is currently available in the Lounge area of Armitage Hall.
Crab (Faculty/Staff) Server Upgrade
Crab was upgraded to newer hardware and a newer version of Solaris 9 on August 18, 2005. If you use SSH to connect to crab, you may be alerted that the server's host identification or host key has changed. This is normal, and it's OK to accept the new key.
If you experience any problems with the new server, please contact our help desk at 225-6274 or help@camden.rutgers.edu
BSB Lab Renovations
Computing Services is currently undergoing renovations in the labs in the Business & Science Building, rooms 108, 109, 110, 132, and 133, all located on the first floor of the building. Consequently, these rooms are closed and customers are asked to please use the facilities in room 117 or the lab on the lower level of the Student Center.
Rooms 108, 109 and 110 will be available for use on or before September 1, 2005, the first day of classes. However, rooms 132 and 133 will still be under construction and expected to be completed by Monday, October 3. Therefore, the Sun Workstations, usually housed in rooms 132 and 133, will be relocated to room 110 until the completion of constrction. For an undetermined amount of time, the Scantron Optical Scanner in room 133, used for grading tests and maintaining grade books, will be available upon request. If you need assistance or have any questions, please feel free to contact help@camden or call 856-225-6274. We apologize for any inconvenience these improvements will create for our customers and have every intention of having the labs operational as soon as possible.
Computing Services Upgrading E-mail Server
On August 11, 2005(Thursday) at 6:00am, Camden Computing Services will be upgrading their campus wide email server to new hardware. This new hardware will provide faster email services and more layers of redundancy. We estimate that this upgrade will interrupt email services for approximately 45 minutes. During this time, email will not be able to be received or sent. Incoming and outgoing email will resume delivery when the new server comes online and nothing will be lost during the transition. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this upgrade, please send email to help@camden.rutgers.edu or call (856)225-6274.
Faculty/Staff Server (crab) Upgrade
The faculty/staff server will be replaced with newer hardware on August 18, 2005 in the evening. The actual downtime will be minimal and will occur between 5:00 and 6:00pm. For the first time in many years, the server upgrade will be done from scratch instead of starting with a carbon-copy of the older server. We are doing this to remove the rather large accumulation of out-dated and inoperative software that has built up over the past several years. In the process, every attempt will be made to restore or upgrade actively used software.
Unfortunately, our auditing system is not able to track usage of library and include files. If you experience any problems with missing, broken, or changed software (including compiler-related issues with libraries or includes) after 8/18/05, please contact help@camden.rutgers.edu. We will gladly re-install any software, libraries, or other files needed for coursework. Some of the files on the previous crab server were quite old, and may no longer function under the new operating system environment. In those instances we will look for updated versions of the same or similiar files for you to use.
If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact Nancy Rohrman at rohrman@camden.rutgers.edu.
Planned Outage Friday, 7/29/05
Computing Services will conduct fiber maintenance on the Camden Campus on Friday, 7/29/05, between 7 am and 10 am, which will affect connectivity to networks in the Camden Campus Center and Cooper Street locations, specifically 405-407Cooper Street. Other buildings may be affected but downtime in the area surrounding 405-407 Cooper Street is not anticipated. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this necessary maintenance period.
RIAS Down 7/20/05 through 7/24/05
RIAS PROCURE-TO-PAY DOWNTIME
The RIAS Procure-to-Pay application will be unavailable Wednesday July 20, 2005 through Sunday July 24, 2005.
All sign on to the RIAS Procure-to-Pay application will be disabled and no attempt to sign on should be made during this period and until a listserv announcement is sent on Monday July 25th advising the system is available for your use.
ESS Data Center Downtime
On Sunday, 07/10/2005, between 8AM and 4PM the Enterprise Systems and Services (ESS) Data Center located at ASB I will be powered down. During this time frame, electrical maintenance for infrastructure enhancements will take place (e.g. Addition of a Power Distribution Unit feed).
As a result of this planned power outage no administrative applications will be available. This includes web applications for students, faculty
and staff, as well as online TSO and IMS access.
Your patience during this time frame is greatly appreciated.
MAC Office Suite Upgraded
Computing Services recently upgraded, or installed new where necessary, all MAC word processors/office suite packages. Consequently, the MACs now have 3 word/office packages: Microsoft Office 2004, Applworks and Open Office. Questions or problems, regarding this upgrade, should be directed to our HELP Desk: help@camden.rutgers.edu or by calling extension 6274.
Faculty/Staff File Server Downtime
On Tuesday, June 28, 2005 between 6:00am and 7:00am, the file server that stores faculty/staff home directories (H: drive) and campus web pages (www.camden.rutgers.edu) will be taken offline for upgrades. Camden Computing Services is adding new disks to the file server to accomodate increased storage needs and to improve performance on the system.
During the downtime, access to faculty/staff H: drives, web pages, email, and campus-wide web sites will be unavailable.
McAfee Ending Support for Win9x/Me - June 30, 2005:
As of June 30, 2005, McAfee will be ending support for Windows 95, 98, and Me on all of their products including both their retail line of products and their corporate line of products that we are licensed for (more details below, if interested).
In order to continue to provide a solution that should work into the future, we are suggesting that the free antivirus software called ClamWin be used. (of course, our top recommendation is to upgrade your operating system to Windows XP). It provides a graphical user interface to the Clam Antivirus engine.
More information about ClamWin and the file to download for installation can be found at:
http://www.clamwin.com/
The interface is simple and has all the features one would want with the exception of on access scanning (it is free after all).
More about McAfee:
This means that McAfee VirusScan MultiPlatform 4.5.1 will be unsupported as of June 30th. While new DAT files and scan engines released for the VirusScan products *may* continue to work with 4.5.1 after the June 30th ate, McAfee will NOT be testing them against 4.5.1. Thus, there is no guarantee that if you continue to run 4.5.1 after the June 30th date, it won't cause problems with your system. Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 systems still running 4.5.1 can upgrade to VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i. There is no upgrade path for VirusScan on Windows 9x/ME systems other than to upgrade to a later OS.
Due to the potential issues with untested DATs and engines, current RADS clients running VirusScan 4.5.1 will no longer be automatically updated through ePO/RADS after June 30th. Clients can continue to run the software and schedule automatic updates locally (using VirusScan Console on the local PC), if desired. Weekly system scans and pre-configured policies through ePO/RADS for all 4.5.1 clients will remain active. No new 4.5.1 RADS clients will be permitted.
Computing Services and the Help Desk will no longer continue to support 4.5.1 after June 30th.
Requests for Fall 2005 Software Installation in Computing Services Labs:
Faculty members, who require a specific software application to be installed on lab PCs for the Fall 2005 Semester , should supply Computing Services with the software no later than Friday, July 15, 2005. Due to the time required to load and test the software, and due to the routine responsibilities of Computing Services Staff, sufficient time must be allowed to fulfill your requests. Computing Services will work diligently to guarantee the installation of any software presented on or before July 15. Software delivered after this date, will not be able to be loaded as part of the images for the fall semester, but, will be evaluated individually to determine how long it will take to get it operational in any/all of the public computer systems.
Requests from faculty/staff for new or upgraded software or hardware must be reviewed. Some requests are not feasible because of incompatibility with existing operating systems, hardware, and other software. We will work with all to accommodate most applications.
As a reminder, Camden Computing Services will be changing the Operating System on our lab PCs to Windows XP (from the present Windows 2000). Please review your lab software needs for the Fall 2005 semester and inform us by July 15, 2005, if you will be supplying a new version. We will perform some preliminary testing of existing software for compatibility he XP operating system.
We appreciate your cooperation.
Administrative & Library Services Down on Sunday, June 12 from 8 AM to 4 PM:
Due to power work required for the Administrative Services Building (ASB) on Busch campus, there will be multiple power outages affecting not only the buildings, but, also IT services provided through ASB and other network dependent buildings in the vicinity including the technical services group of the Library system.
Thus, services such as registration, grade/transcript access, and RU Online Directory from Adminstrative Servcies along with IRIS, Workflows, and Ask a Librarian from the Library will not be available during the outage.
The stability of all of these services dictates that temporary outages must be scheduled this summer.
Sorry, for any inconvenience this causes.
Other potential Shut Down dates for electrical work to the ASB facility are:
July 10th - 8am - 4pm - PDU installation - tentative
August 8th - 8am - 4pm - Generator installation - tentative
August 21st - 8am - 4pm - Generator installation - tentative
