BSB Summer Lab Hours:

OIT Lab Hours of Operation for computing labs located in the Business & Science Building can be found on the following web page: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/hours.php

Unintended Side Effect of File Server Upgrade:

Please note that this issue only affects those with home directories on the clam server. During today's student file server upgrade, a disk image created during testing two months ago was accidentally included in the data transfer. As a result, students may find files or email messages that they deleted between March 19th, 2008 and May 22, 2008 have now reappeared. In some cases, these accidentally restored files may put you over quota or complicate management of your Inbox. OIT staff will be monitoring the Help Desk mailing list (help@camden.rutgers.edu) over the holiday weekend to assist with any issues you may have as a result.

NJEdge Spring DRG/VRG Meeting in Camden on 5/29/08:

The NJEdge Spring meeting of the Data Resources Group (DRG) and Video Resource Group (VRG) will be held on the Camden Campus on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 from 9:30am to 4pm in room 337B of the Business & Science Building. Breakfast and Lunch will be served.

Agenda (tentative):

  • Transitioning to HDTV
  • FIOS – PEG channels
  • NJVid (http://www.njvid.org)
  • Video Furnace Presentation by Affinity Enterprises

Co-Chairs: Bob Gerdes, Lee Kobus

Spring 2008 Smart Classroom Questionnaire Concluded:

Thank you to everyone who responded to this year's Smart Classroom Questionnaire. Your feedback is very important and always welcome. One respondent was chosen at random to receive a special thank-you gift. Congratulations to Dr. Carla Giaudrone, of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, who won the Cordless Optical Air Mouse.
2008 SmartClass Survey Winner

Graduates Keep Computer Account for 1 Year:

Any computer account (which includes NetID and email) belonging to a Rutgers graduate will automatically remain open for 1 year after the date of completion of graduation requirements.  When the end of the 1 year extension nears, you will receive email reminding you that your account will be closed and that you should back up any personal files that you wish to save.  At this time, you should also consider forwarding your mail to another email address and letting people know that your email address is changing.

You will not be able to extend your Alumni Account/NetID beyond that post-graduation period. If you do not have any other email accounts, you might want to consider using an ad-supported email service like Yahoo, Gmail, or America Online. If you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as Verizon or Comcast, check with them as you may already have access to email accounts through your ISP.

File Server Maintenance Scheduled for Friday May 23, 2008 at 6am:

UPDATE: 1:30PM on 5/23/2008 – The data transfer is finished, all services restored.

UPDATE: 9:00AM on 5/23/2008 – The data transfer is taking longer than estimated. Downtime has been extended until 2PM today.

Downtime originally scheduled for 5/23/2008 between 6am and 10am

In order to complete a disk upgrade on the student file server, all access to student email, web pages, and home directories (H:) will be blocked starting at 6am on Friday May 23, 2008. At that time OIT will begin transferring all student files onto newer, faster, larger disks. Although we have scheduled the downtime to last until 10am, it may end sooner if the file transfer takes less time.

There may also be intermittent downtime for non-student OIT services, including faculty and staff email, web pages, home directories (H:), and other services that utilize either of the OIT file servers. Unlike the student services outage, any faculty/staff outages should be relatively brief.

Any email messages sent to students during this downtime will be placed into deferral queues or be bounced back to the sender as undeliverable. It may take up to 24 hours for any deferred messages to arrive.

OIT Requests for Required Software Installation in the Computing Services Labs:

Faculty members who require a specific software application to be available on public lab PCs for the Summer or Fall '08 semesters should bring the software to Camden Computing Services no later than May 05, 2008 for the Summer semesters and no later than August 1, 2008 for the Fall semester. Due to the time required to load and test new software on all systems in the labs, sufficient time must be allowed prior to the start of each semester in order to fulfill your requests.

Software presented later than these dates may not be able to be successfully installed for the start of classes.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Extended lab hours in the Business and Science Building.

OIT will be extending the open hours in the Business and Science building computer labs until the end of the semester. Please see the hours for all our computer labs at the following url: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/hours.php

Email and Internet Connectivity Issues:

On 4/10/2008, due to a hardware failure between 12:15pm and 3:15pm, email service, home directories and website access, became unavailable. All services have now been restored, however, some delayed emails may take up to 24 hours to reach their final destinations.

Reserve Optical Scanner to Grade Finals:

Reservations are now being accepted to score final exams on the Scantron Optical Scanner in room 132, Business & Science Building. Faculty using the scanner, their department secretary or TA should have already been instructed on it's use. Computing Services is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Scantron ES2800, not scoring the tests. Please go to the following web page, http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/reservations/ and click on view under "Scantron Exam Scanner" to check for available time slots. Click on room-reserve@camden.rutgers.edu to submit the day and time you are requesting via e-mail. Your reservation will be confirmed via e-mail.

Internet Connectivity Issues:

Issues with one of Rutgers' Internet Service Providers (ISPs) may cause random connectivity problems today between computers inside the Rutgers network and computers outside of the Rutgers network. Some of these problems may include lost SSH connections, inability to send or receive email, or delayed delivery of email between Rutgers and non-Rutgers addresses.

University telecommuncations staff are working with our ISP to resolve the issues and restore full Internet connectivity.

As of 4:15pm on 3/26/08, the cause of the network issue has been identified, and we are working to restore services.

All services, including the ability to send or receive email between Rutgers and non-Rutgers addresses should return by 8pm tonight.

Some delayed emails may take up to 24 hours to reach their final destinations.

New York Census Research Data Center Grants:

  • Are you looking for sources of economic, demographic, health, or social survey data?
  • Do you need a large national panel data set for research on medical expenditures or other confidential health data?
  • Have you ever wanted to analyze employment or productivity using a firm's actual values of imported inputs?
  • Do you wish you had access to data with detailed geographic identifiers for research on neighborhood effects?

The Rutgers Research Data Center (RDC) initiative can help you! Through the New York Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC), Rutgers researchers have access to data sets that include confidential variables not available on public use versions of these data sets. These data can support a range of important research questions that could not otherwise be conducted. With funding from the Academic Excellence Fund, the Rutgers RDC is working to support such research efforts through:

  • Seed grant funding of up to $10,000 for Rutgers researchers to help offset the costs of a research project at the New York Census Research Data Center. Proposals are due July 1, 2008.
  • Information for developing a proposal to use RDC data, including a pre-proposal workshop on April 4, 2008.
For more information on the Rutgers RDC initiative, please visit: http://www.ihhcpar.rutgers.edu/rdc/

Account Deletions on Clam and Crab for Spring 2008

Electronic mail has been sent to accounts which have been marked as "no longer  current Rutgers faculty, students or staff" as determined by our data base. Crab and Clam accounts will be closed on April 29, 2008.   We ask that these account holders move their files to new systems before this date, or save them to a flash drive. The checking of accounts is an automated procedure performed with the computer systems every semester on all campuses of Rutgers. This list of clam and crab accounts that are to be deleted is posted below for your review. If your account is listed, it is scheduled for closing.

Clam Account Deletion List
Crab Account Deletion List

If your name is on this list and you feel that you are still a valid student/staff/faculty member, please send us E-mail before the above dates with your FULL first name, last name, and account name to:

rohrman@camden.rutgers.edu

We will then manually check further on the status of your account and will respond back to you personally via E-mail.

Note...if you are a student who is not taking courses this semester, then your account has to be closed. No exceptions. You can reopen your account, using the normal makeacct procedure, as soon as you start attending classes again.

There are many commercial providers of Internet access such as Prodigy, CompuServe, and America-Online whose fees are reasonable. There are many local firms also that provide Internet access (called ISPs). Check your phone book or newspapers for their advertisements.
