OIT Spam Policy Change:
OIT-Camden Computing Services will be changing the spam rentention policy from 30 days to 14 days on March 16th. This change only impacts those who have spam filtering enabled and setup to save their spam emails to the Spam-Messages folder. When a spam email comes in and is saved to your Spam-Messages folder, those emails are kept for 30 days. The purpose of keeping these emails is to allow users to retrieve messages from their Spam-Messages folder that may have been incorrectly identified as spam. On March 16th, OIT will be lowering the default number of days, to keep old spam, to 14 days. This means after a spam message has been sitting in a user's Spam-Messages folder for 14 days, that message will automatically be deleted. If you have already changed the default number of days to keep old spam messages, this system wide change will not effect you. This change only effects users who have kept the default 30 days. If you would like to adjust your spam filtering settings, including the number of days to keep old spam messages, please go to one of the following URLs and select "Enable/Disable Email Spam Filtering":

Printing Conservation in OIT Managed Student Computing Labs: In conjunction with Rutgers University’s “Green Purchasing” initiative and in our ongoing effort to be good stewards of university resources, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will be implementing a Printing Conservation Program in its student computing labs beginning in the Fall 2007 semester. Currently, students have unlimited printing available to them in OIT managed student labs and, as a result, printing costs have risen dramatically to almost one-half million dollars per year. Students recognize that the unlimited printing policy encourages waste and many have asked for a printing conservation policy. We believe that most students are environmentally conscious as two-thirds of them print less than 500 pages per semester. We also know that one student printed well over 70,000 pages last semester! Clearly, we need a policy designed to curb excessive printing and enable more efficient use of student computer fees.
In addition to our current practices of utilizing recycled paper and encouraging duplex (double-sided) printing, we will implement a per-person semester limit for black and white printing in the student labs. Individuals will be charged a fee per page printed over the limit. All color printing will be charged on a per page basis. Since student computer fees currently subsidize student lab printing, we are especially sensitive to setting semester printing limits and charges that they themselves believe are fair and reasonable.
Beginning February 28, 2007 and continuing through May 2007, OIT will be hosting an on-line survey that will ask students to tell us what they feel is a fair semester printing limit, overuse charge, and color printing charge. Students can access the survey using their NetID at http://printsurvey.rutgers.edu. Data collected from the survey will be used to help determine appropriate limit(s) and charges.
It is our goal to implement a policy that will help contain costs and be environmentally friendly with no negative impact on the academic experience. We are excited to work with the university community in this effort and look forward to any feedback that you may have for us. Please feel free to contact us at help@camden.rutgers.edu. Additional information regarding printing in student labs can be found at: http://printing.rutgers.edu.
