Campus Network File Server Downtime:
Time/Date: May 26, 2006 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM (8 hours)
Summary of services affected:
- email
- H: drives
- web pages
- ssh/sftp/ftp access to Unix servers
We have chosen this particular time and date in order minimize the number of people who will be directly affected by the 8-hour downtime needed to complete a massive upgrade to our campus network file servers. These file servers are used to store all campus web pages, home directories on timeshare systems (clam, crab, hpc), email for clam and crab accounts, and for forwarding/scanning services related to the new Exchange server.
For details about the affected services and additional information about
the upgrade itself, please visit:

Requests for Required Software Installation
in the Computing Services Labs:
Faculty members who require a specific software application to be available on public lab PCs for the Summer 2006 semesters should bring the software to Camden Computing Services no later than May 10, 2006. Due to the time required to load and test new software in the labs, and the time spent by Computing Services staff on their routine responsibilities, sufficient time must be allowed prior to the start of the Summer semesters in order to fulfill your requests.
Computing Services is unable to guarantee the installation of any software presented less than two weeks before it's needed for a class.
We appreciate your cooperation.
General PC Access in Armitage Hall:
The Foreign Language computer lab, located in the basement of
Armitage Hall (B-2), will soon open its doors and a select number of
seats to the general public as a general computing lab. Initially, there will
be 6 seats available in the lab for any student/faculty/staff.
Systems 34 thru 39 will be available for general use (back 6
systems in the lab) starting this Wednesday, 4/19/06. The number of available systems will likely increase in the future.
So, if the other labs are filled, or you happen to be in Armitage Hall
and want access to a lab computer, you can check out the basement Foreign Language lab. (Note - if you have a wireless laptop, all of
Armitage Hall is also on a wireless network and you can use that also).
You will find typical software available, including word processors,
email access and web browsers. The Foreign Language lab is open
Monday thru Thursday from 8am till 9pm and Friday from 8am till 12noon.
Clean-up CD for PCs:
Has your PC slowed down to a snail’s pace?
Is your PC sending you strange messages about problems?
When you try to go to a WEB site does your PC send you somewhere else?
Is your PC telling you to visit some WEB site?
Does your PC seem to have a mind of its own?
Are you seeing strange “pop-ups” on your screen?
Are you having trouble passing “RU Compliant”?
Then try the new CD produced by Camden Computing Services available at the Help Desk in BSB or CCC. It is loaded with software and information that can be useful in eradicating problems that can infest your PC. The CD is “self-starting” and menu driven.
Changes to Email Settings:
Camden Computing Services will be disabling insecure email protocols (imap/pop) and just supporting secure email protocols
(imaps/pops) in the near future. This is a step to enhance email security on campus. This change will take affect on August 1, 2006.
These changes may require some people to modify their email software configurations. For faculty/staff office systems, no changes will need to be made by
yourself, since your departmental IT/UCS staff will be handling your systems. For those who solely use webmail, no changes are needed either.
For home users or residential students who use other email software besides webmail, it is important to make sure that the email software you use is correctly configured
to use secure email. You can make that change today, or anytime before August 1st. This change is just a matter of checking a
few configuration boxes dealing with secure connections, in your email software.
For details on how your email software
should be configured to be secure, please see: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/email/configure.php If your email software is not configured correctly before
August 1, 2006, your email software may fail to work on that date. Our help desk will be available to assist people to convert
to secure email protocols. If you have any questions..please contact: help@camden.rutgers.edu
Changes to Spam Filtering:
1. Spam Filtering Defaults:
For current faculty and staff there are no changes. For all new faculty who create accounts after May 15, 2006, their accounts will be setup to have spam filtering turned
on by default. They will receive automated email when they create their account, that will give them information on this issue.
(including information on how to turn this off if they wish). Students already have spam filtering turned on by default. This
is an excellent way to minimize spam email. Any user can turn on/off spam filtering on their account by going to:
http://clam.rutgers.edu/account_tools.html (students)
http://crab.rutgers.edu/account_tools.html (faculty/staff)
Camden Computing Services encourages all people to turn on spam filtering.
2. Forwarding Email and Spam Filtering:
Another change is how spam filtering and forwarding are handled. Currently, on student accounts, if a student has chosen to
forward their email to another account, no spam filtering is done. On May 15, 2006, all forwarded mail on student accounts
will be spam filtered first before forwarding, with spam being saved to the student's Spam-Messages folder in their accounts.
There are no changes for faculty/staff with this issue. For all users, who decide to forward their email in the future,
they will have the ability to have spam filtering turned on by default before forwarding their email (and thus receive less
spam). This can be done at the above web page as well. Camden Computing Services encourages all people to use this
feature also if forwarding your email. (This includes faculty/staff who forward their email to camlink, the campus exchange server)
For questions or more information, please contact help@camden.rutgers.edu
Reserve Scantron Optical Scanner for Finals:
Reservations are now being accepted to score final exams on the Scantron Optical Scanner in room 132, Business & Science Building. Faculty using the scanner, their department secretary or TA should have already been instructed on it's use. Computing Services is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Scantron ES2800, not scoring the tests. Please go to the following web page, http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/reservations/ and click on view under "Scantron Exam Scanner" to check for available time slots. Click on "email" next to Ann Bilbrough's name to send her the day and time you are requesting. Your reservation will be confirmed via e-mail.
Extended & End of Semester BSB Lab Hours:

Network Disruption on Friday, 1/20/06
The network connection between the Camden campus and Rutgers-New Brunswick, which also
provides Camden access to the Internet, suddenly stopped working at approximately 7pm on
Friday, January 20th.
OIT (Telecommunications and Camden Computing Services) staff worked with Verizon
throughout the night and all day Saturday to resolve the problem. It was eventually
determined that the problem was with Verizon's circuits to the Camden campus, which they
then had to reconstruct.
Their efforts were finally able to bring service back to the campus around 4pm on Saturday,
January 21st.
We do not expect any further network failures, and apologize for the prolonged disruption of service.

Account Deletions on Clam and Crab for Spring 2006
Electronic mail has been sent to accounts which have been marked as "no longer current Rutgers faculty, students or staff" as determined by our data base. Crab and Clam accounts will be closed on April 24, 2006. We ask that these account holders move their files to new systems before this date, or save them to a floppy disk. The checking of accounts is an automated procedure performed with the computer systems every semester on all campuses of Rutgers. This list of clam and crab accounts that are to be deleted is posted below for your review. If your account is listed, it is scheduled for closing.

There are many commercial providers of Internet access such as Prodigy, CompuServe, and America-Online whose fees are reasonable. There are many local firms also that provide Internet access (called ISPs). Check your phone book or newspapers for their advertisements
