Infrastructure Upgrade Scheduled for 1/9/07:

OVERVIEW:
The Office of Information Technology has scheduled a follow up infrastructure upgrade for Tuesday, January 9, 2007. The upgrade is scheduled to start at 3:00 AM and finish by 8:00 AM.

HOW YOU MAY BE AFFECTED:
The following services may be degraded or unavailable during the upgrade:

- Eden services, including email and web pages
- Eden access via my.rutgers.edu
- Rutgers Email lists (e.g. listname@rams.rutgers.edu,
listname@email.rutgers.edu)
- Campus Computing Facilities services, including RUWireless, RUWired,
and computer labs
- Jabber (Rutgers Chat Service)
- Account creation/password resets
- RULink (email and calendar services at http://rulink.rutgers.edu)
- Course management software (specifically, WebCT and Sakai)

Please note that email and other services provided by RCI will not be
affected by this upgrade.

OBJECTIVES:
This downtime is necessary to finish some hardware upgrades that could
not be completed during the November 16, 2006 maintenance work. The
objectives of this activity are:

- Upgrade hardware
- Improve reliability and performance
- Provide additional processing capacity to support increasing demand
- Provide ongoing maintenance coverage for hardware

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your
patience. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the NBCS
Help Desk at 732-445-HELP (4357).

Towers Registration on 1/8/07:

All Towers Resident Students:

OVERVIEW:

On January 8, 2007, all current ResNet registrations will expire.  This is part of the start-of-semester process that is required of all students on the residential network at the beginning of each semester.

HOW YOU WILL BE AFFECTED:

Your registration will expire the morning of January 8, 2007. At that time, you will no longer have internet access in your dorm room. PLEASE WAIT UNTIL YOU CANNOT ACCESS EXTERNAL WEBSITES (e.g. http://www.google.com) BEFORE YOU RE-REGISTER AND PASS ruCOMPLIANT.  If you will be off campus during this time, you will need to re-register and pass ruCompliant when you return to campus to regain full Internet access.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Please visit http://resnet.rutgers.edu to re-register your computer and pass ruCompliant. Just click on the Register Your Computer Now link and follow the directions to regain full Internet access.

In order to make this a smooth process, we encourage you to make sure your computer remains up to date with Windows patches and virus protection software during the winter break. If you are getting a new computer over the break, you should also make sure that you have the latest Windows patches and anti-virus software installed.

You can keep your computer up to date by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Additionally, you can obtain Trend Micro antivirus software for free at: http://mssg.rutgers.edu/documentation/rads We highly recommend RADS (Rutgers Antivirus Delivery System) because it automatically updates for you even if you are at home during winter break. All you need is an active Internet connection.

Macintosh and Linux/UNIX users also have to run ruCompliant. If you use one of these operating systems, you will automatically pass ruCompliant.

If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk at 856-225-6274 or visit the Help Desk in the Business and Science Building (room 109 or 132).

While you may find these actions disruptive, these steps are taken to help ensure a secure networking environment and reliable service to our residents.  We thank you for your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

-use hard to guess passwords and keep them private
-keep personal information offline (do not send via email, IM or place
   on a web page)

Electronic mail has been sent to accounts which have been marked as "no longer  current Rutgers faculty, students or staff" as determined by our data base. Crab and Clam accounts will be closed on December 7, 2006.   We ask that these account holders move their files to new systems before this date, or save them to a floppy disk. The checking of accounts is an automated procedure performed with the computer systems every semester on all campuses of Rutgers. This list of clam and crab accounts that are to be deleted is posted below for your review. If your account is listed, it is scheduled for closing.
