Guidelines For Foreign Language Placement

Effective date: 2/10/04

General Requirements stipulate that students in Arts & Sciences majors must successfully complete study of a foreign language at the level of 102 (second semester elementary) or above.

Actual placement of students may be at a higher or lower level and will depend upon their scores on the Rutgers-Camden proficiency exams in the foreign languages.
In order to fulfill the foreign language requirement, students must minimally complete one semester of study at the 102 (second semester elementary ) level or above as appropriate to their language ability. Students can discuss their foreign language placement with an academic advisor @856-225-6043. Note: It is highly recommended for students to continue in the foreign language which they studied in high school early in their college career.

Foreign Language Placements:

If a student has had three or more years of prior study in the same language, s/he may not take 101 for credit. (Shorthand: 3 years, no 101)
If a student has had four or more years of prior study in the same language, s/he may not take 102 for credit. (Shorthand: 4 years, no 102)
An exception to the above rules is made for students who have not had formal study in a given language for a period of ten or more years. These students may begin again at the 101 level.

Exceptions to taking the foreign language placement exam include:

  • students admitted with high school deficiencies (less than 2 years of high school foreign language study)
  • students who receive a score of 4 or 5 on the ETS Advanced Placement Exam in French, German, or Spanish
  • transfer students or freshmen with college level transfer credit who have already completed equivalent courses fulfilling the foreign language requirement
  • students who took their last high school language course ten or more years ago
  • students who will study a different language from the German, French or Spanish they took in high school (for example, a student took Spanish 1& 2 in high school, but plans to take French or German at RU-C)
  • students who plan to major in areas with no foreign language requirement, namely accounting, finance, management, marketing, nursing, pharmacy, engineering, and bio-med technology.
