SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES BY MEMBERS OF THE DEAN'S OFFICE

CAMDEN COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
Margaret Marsh, Dean
Michael Palis, Associate Dean

In February 2007, the Dean’s Task Force submitted to Dean Margaret Marsh a report outlining several recommendations designed to improve the College in such areas as undergraduate education; graduate education; adult learning and academic outreach; faculty recruitment, retention, and research; and development and public relations. In response to the task force report, Dean Marsh quickly enacted several initiatives, including significantly increasing the number of scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students, hiring a recruiter for adult learners and the Graduate School, and establishing an ad hoc committee and hiring an external consultant to recommend long-term strategies for enrollment management and student retention.

The university is currently preparing for the Middle States decennial reaccreditation review in 2008. The College and the campus as a whole are heavily involved in the preparation of the Self-Study Report, which addresses compliance to several standards defined by Middle States, with a primary focus on undergraduate education. Following the submission of the Self-Study Report, a team of external peer educators will conduct site visits to all three campuses of Rutgers to evaluate the university in the context of its self-study and the Middle States standards for accreditation and then make a formal set of recommendations concerning the findings of its visit.

The College welcomed its first Ph.D. students ever this fall 2007 semester with the inauguration of the Ph.D. program in childhood studies. Administered by the newly established Department of Childhood Studies, in coordination with the Center for Children and Childhood Studies, the Ph.D. program is the first ever doctoral program on the Camden campus as well as the nation’s first doctoral program in childhood studies. In addition to the Ph.D. program, the department also offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Childhood Studies.

The new Center for Computational and Integrative Biology was established, with Dr. Joseph Martin as acting director. The Center formalizes the working group of faculty members that have been working together the past several years to develop the proposal for a Ph.D. program in computational biology and who have collaborated in research in the new fledgling area. Additionally, the Center is heavily involved in finalizing the plans for the proposed Integrative Biology and Genomic Medicine Institute, which will bring together a critical mass of faculty and researchers from Rutgers-Camden, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and Cooper University Hospital. The mission of the new Institute is to pioneer new biomedical and life science research from high-level collaborations among the researchers at the participating institutions.

The campus community mourned the loss of Louis Fuller, director of the Teacher Preparation Program (TPP), who passed away on May 11th, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Lou helped the TPP evolve into a first-rate program for students interested in teaching careers. He will be greatly missed. Sara Becker, the program’s associate director, has been promoted to the director position. We look forward to working with Sara to continue TPP’s tradition of success and excellence.

On the bright side, the College welcomed two new tenure-track faculty members in 2006-2007. They join the ranks of our excellent faculty, whose contributions to scholarship, teaching, and service continue to play a vital role in maintaining Rutgers-Camden’s preeminent position among institutions of higher learning in this part of the state. The hundreds of books, articles, and chapters published by the faculty in 2006-2007 – many of which have received national and international acclaim – are outlined in the pages that follow.
