Dear FAS faculty and staff:

There is a recall involving Dell notebook computer batteries and the Consumer Products Safety Commission, involving 4.1 million computer batteries. Dell Spokesman Ira Williams said "In rare cases, a short-circuit could cause the battery to overheat, causing a risk of smoke and / or fire." For additional information on the program and assistance in identifying affected batteries, visit https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/.

It's probably best not to use your notebook computer until we have determined whether your battery is in the recall group. You can bring your notebook computer to us in room B2 Armitage Hall (the Language Lab) for us to examine Mondays through Fridays between 8 am and 4:00 pm. It takes about 10 minutes to check. If no one is there when you come down, if you leave us a note, someone will get back to you that day.

You can also check the battery yourself. If you click on the link below there is a short video on how to remove the battery so you can see what numbers are on the battery, and check that against the recall list (which is on our cit.camden.rutgers.edu web site. The video clip is in mpeg format, for those who are familiar with that. It may not play correctly on your computer if you don't have a fast internet connection - all of Rutgers has a fast connection - but I can send it to you in another format if you wish.

Below is the dell web site giving the serial numbers of the recalled batteries:

Below is our video clip on how to remove the battery so you can see the serial number to check if its on the recall list:

Just a reminder that some of the Dell notebook computers came with two batteires - one of which is inside the computer, and the other in one of the pockets of the carrying case.

Thanks. Please let me know if you have any questions.
