Virtual Hosts

The software which Camden Computing Services uses on the campus web server has the ability to map unique network names to specific directories. This is often referred to as using virtual hostnames. A department may request a unique hostname for their site and that name is then mapped to the directory on the web server where their web site resides. For example, if the Archaeology department had a web site on the Camden web server (http://www.camden.rutgers.edu) they could request the unique hostname:

archaeology.camden.rutgers.edu

If available, the name would be registered in University DNS, then the web server would be reconfigured to use this new name. The name would map to the specific directory where the department's pages are kept on the server. Note that virtual hostnames do not map to files, only to directories.

Continuing with our example, if the URL for the Archaeology department's web site had been:

http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/dept-pages/archaeology

After the virtual hostname was setup, they could instead use the URL:

http://archaeology.camden.rutgers.edu

Even if a department chooses to use a virtual hostname, their existing URLs (those that use www.camden.rutgers.edu) will continue to work.

Since virtual hostnames must be unique, Camden Computing Services asks that all Camden departments and organizations interested in using virtual hostnames please follow the pattern below:

deptname.camden.rutgers.edu

This helps prevent confusion between campuses when department names are the same or similar.

One additional benefit of using a virtual hostname is access to statistical reports for web sites that use them. Camden Computing Services generates reports for each virtual hostname on the main campus web server. The data collected for these reports only includes accesses to your site using the virtual hostname. So if you are interested in obtaining accurate reports, it's important to make sure your site links all utilize the virtual hostname.
