Streaming Media at Rutgers-Camden
What is streaming media?
When you encounter the
term streaming media it's important to note that the term refers to the
delivery method. Online delivery of audio and video has evolved rapidly, and
continues to do so. So to define what it is, we will keep it simple: Streaming media
is audio and/or video that plays as it is received. You do not have to wait for an
entire song, video clip, or movie to download before you can listen or watch if
it is available in a format that supports streaming.
How
do I create streaming media?
The most recent
versions of Windows and Mac OS X come with some basic media editing and authoring
tools. You can also purchase more advanced or special-purpose media creation
tools (often groups of programs referred to as suites). The methods
for creating streaming media are too numerous and evolve too rapidly for us to
document here. If you are unsure of how to create streaming media
files, please contact the Camden Computing Help Desk. You can
reach the Help Desk by email at help@camden.rutgers.edu and by phone (856)225-6274.
How
do I put streaming media on a server?
Compared to the wide variety
of free hosting services available (such as YouTube or Vimeo), the Camden Campus has limited resources for
locally-hosted streaming media. We have been maintaining a very old legacy
service for RealMedia by way of the free version of HelixServer, but do not
recommend this service for new media hosting. There is also some limited support
for hosting Windows Media Files on an IIS server in Camden. A third option involves
an open source media tool called JW Player, that allows you to stream media through
our campus' Apache web server.
Please contact the Help Desk for specific details on how to host your
media in a streaming format, whether using a local server or a third party
hosting service.
