In 1993, Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, spearheaded the Rutgers/LEAP Initiative. The Initiative created a comprehensive charter school to enhance opportunities for the children and families of Camden through integrated education, health and human service programs, and community development. With a $1.5 million planning grant from the Delaware River Port Authority, a team of university faculty members, in partnership with a working group representing key community stakeholders and parents, engaged in a comprehensive planning process to develop the foundation for this Initiative.

LEAP's comprehensive approach supports students from early
childhood through college.
