Thanh Huynh, a senior in the School of Business and President of the Accounting Society at Rutgers–CamdenClassroom reading didn’t end at LEAP Academy when Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign wrapped up last week.  One day after 65 volunteers read to 200 children at LEAP, Board of Trustees chairperson Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago continued the enthusiasm of the event by reading at the school.

Dr. Santiago was a special guest in two LEAP kindergarten classrooms on October 9th when she shared the Spanish story “La Cucaracha Martina” with 40 students in Ms. Maritza Lopez’s and Ms. Maureen Gibbs’ classes.

In Ms. Lopez’s class, Dr. Santiago read the book in Spanish and five-year old Andy Olivares translated her words into English for his classmates.  While the emphasis was on reading, the biggest hit with the students was Dr. Santiago’s puppy, Tilin and Atachi, who joined her in the classrooms.  “The kids were excited and want to see Dr. Santiago, Tilin and Atachi  again soon,” Ms. Lopez said.
