Mission statement
The purpose of the strength and
conditioning staff at Rutgers University-Camden is to help physically prepare the
entire athletic population by using safe and effective techniques.
We aim to provide comprehensive protocols that encompass all the facets of
performance enhancement, which includes strength and power development, speed,
quickness, agility, flexibility, nutritional guidance, and all other pertinent
information. It is our goal to provide our student-athletes with the best strength
and conditioning program in the universe!
In all of our endeavors, we are committed to the principles of ethical conduct,
integrity, and excellence.
Strength program
The Scarlet Raptor strength and
conditioning program is designed to provide each student-athlete with techniques that
are productive, effective and efficient with regards to athletic performance
enhancement.
Our program is geared toward assisting all of our student-athletes reach their physical
potential. Protocols are tailored to engage student-athletes in the management of
strength, speed and conditioning during the season and enhance these components in the
off-season.
Student-athletes have access to a strength training facility that has a full range of
free weight equipment, plate loaded equipment and related conditioning apparatus that
makes the facility a breeding ground for intense training.
Strength, speed, conditioning, agility, flexibility and nutrition education are
components of each protocol. Our training year is divided into three segments:
pre-season, in-season and off-season. During the "Pre" and "Off" seasons,
student-athletes are involved in training that is intense and focused and based on a
four-day work week. In-season participation is limited to two days a week.
Our protocols are based on the progressive overload principle, focusing on
multi-joint movements, movements that will help our student-athletes function
better on the level that they will compete on.
Speed training is performed twice a week. We work to correct mechanics and teach
proper running techniques so that running properly will become second nature.
Agility and conditioning sessions are done consistently throughout the year. They are
done with an eye to the sport, and energy system and movement patterns needed to
compete in that sport.
Flexibilty training occurs year-round and involves individual instruction as
well as team-oriented supervision. This program is a continual one that is stressed
daily.
Nutritional education is a very important aspect of our total program.
Student-athletes need to be aware of how much food they need to eat in order to
maintain a healthy, well-functioning body. The strength staff is continually
educating student-athletes on the importance of good nutrition and making the
right choices, especially during their competitive season.

NICK SEXTON EARNS NSCA ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
CAMDEN -- Rutgers University-Camden
men's soccer star Nick Sexton (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill West) has been honored by
the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a 2000 NSCA All-America Athlete.
The nomination was submitted by Rutgers-Camden Strength and Conditioning Coach
Gregory White.
Sexton, a senior back, helped the 2000 soccer team to a 6-0 start, the best undefeated
record in school history. A second-year player for the Scarlet Raptors after transferring
from Camden County College, he earned Honorable Mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference
honors as a junior.
The NSCA award program, in its 16th year, recognizes outstanding male and female
athletes who have excelled in their strength training and conditioning. Selections also
are based on community involvement, academic achievement and leadership qualities. The
program is supported by Power Systems, Inc., a fitness industry leader based in
Knoxville, Tenn.
White, a certified strength training instructor who has worked with numerous
collegiate and professional athletes from around the country, has been involved with the
NSCA All-American program for four years. During that time, he has placed nine of his
athletes on the All-American team.
