set for spring season
CAMDEN - Head coach Bob Cardea and his Rutgers University-Camden golf
program finished the 2005 portion of their schedule on a high note, capturing
the championship at their own Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors
Fall Invitational on Oct. 28. That capped another successful semester
for the Raptors, who posted a 44-41-1 mark in the fall, giving the team
four consecutive winning semesters for the first time in program history.
This spring the Scarlet Raptors are looking to become the first golf
team at Rutgers-Camden to post back-to-back winning school years (fall
and spring semesters combined) since the 1992-93 and 1993-94 teams became
the only clubs to accomplish that feat.
The Scarlet Raptors return everyone from their fall team except Brian
Mason (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), who used his final semester of eligibility
in the first semester. Mason had a fine fall season, finishing second
on the club with a 79.7 average while leading the team in three of the
Raptors' six invitationals. He finished his career in style as the overall
medalist at the RU-Camden Scarlet Raptors Fall Invitational.
Cardea's team returns six lettermen, led by junior Matt Tomasic (Berlin,
NJ/St. Augustine Prep). A transfer from a strong Moravian College program,
Tomasic became the Scarlet Raptors' top golfer in the fall, leading the
club with a 79.0 average, including a season-best 74 at the Moravian College
Fall Invitational Sept. 22. That score was three strokes off the program
record.
Freshman Michael Nauss (Blackwood, NJ/Paul VI) finished with an 82.8
average in the fall during his first semester of collegiate competition,
while senior John Goff (Haddon Heights, NJ/Paul VI) averaged 83.2 while
competing in all six fall outings. Goff, whose 78 led the Raptors at the
Lebanon Valley College Fall Invitational Sept. 26, owns an 87.2 average
over 43 career invitationals at Rutgers-Camden.
Also returning are juniors Rob Burgess (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic)
and Joe Zulli (Bellmawr, NJ/Paul VI) and freshman Eric Welsh (Cinnaminson,
NJ/Cinnaminson). Zulli compiled an average of 84.4 in five fall outings
and had a career average of 86.6 in 20 invitationals. Burgess shot a 92
in his one outing last fall at the RU-Camden Scarlet Raptors Fall Invitational,
while Welsh averaged 94.5 in a pair of fall outings.
