Lady Raptors set
for spring season

CAMDEN - The Rutgers University-Camden women's crew team has plenty of reasons to be optimistic entering the spring sprint (2,000-meter races) season. The Lady Raptors feature eight athletes returning from the fall season, including six who lettered with the program a year ago. They have an additional rower in sophomore Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace), who will be a coxswain this season after serving as a team manager last fall. Finally, Rutgers-Camden is looking with great anticipation toward the completion of the Camden County Boathouse along the Cooper River in Pennsauken, which is scheduled to open June 1. That facility, which will serve as a major hub for rowing throughout the Northeast and the country, will be managed by Rutgers-Camden Head Coach Jamie Stack.

The Lady Raptors competed in a pair of regattas last fall as they rowed in three events (Women's College Four+, Women's Club Four+ and Women's Dad Vail Eight+) at the Navy Day Regatta Oct. 15 and ran a pair of boats (Women's Club Eights and Women's Open Fours with Cox) at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta Oct. 29.

This spring, Stack's team has seven competitions on the schedule, beginning with the Murphy Cup March 25 and ending with the renowned Dad Vail Regatta May 13-14. Both of those events are on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Lady Raptors also will be rowing in Baltimore, in Occoquan, Virginia and in York, Pennsylvania, in addition to a competition on their home course, the Cooper River, for the Knecht Cup April 8-9.

Serving as team captain for her final semester with the program is senior port-side rower Nicole Corl (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Corl, one of two remaining competitors from the Raptors' first varsity boat at the Head of the Ohio Regatta (Oct. 2, 2004 in Pittsburgh), is the lone veteran to be part of the Rutgers-Camden program since it started as a club team in 2002. She was named the team MVP for the 2004-05 school year and was the stroke seat for the first varsity win in program history, when the Raptors won the Women's Frosh/Novice Eight Division III Finals at the Knecht Cup Regatta April 17, 2005.

The other returning competitor from the Raptors' first varsity boat is sophomore port/starboard Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood). In addition to Corl and Fleming, returning letterwinners include sophomore starboard Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman), junior port Cynthia Burt (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), junior coxswain/port Renee Martin (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and sophomore starboard Laura Williams (Cherry Hill, NJ/home schooled). Laura Williams' younger sister, freshman starboard Regina Williams (Cherry Hill, NJ/home schooled), and freshman port Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI) both return after making their collegiate debut during the fall season.

Serving as the team manager this season will be another veteran of the Raptors' first varsity boat, Kristin Szostak (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg). Szostak used her final semester of eligibility in the fall.

Terry Humbrecht, a former member of the men's club team at Rutgers-Camden, will begin his second spring as the assistant coach for Stack.
