A contemporary stigma contest

Discussion Questions

(1) What is the general point the video is making about the nature of deviance and the existence of stigma contests?

(2) In the wake of the Clarence Thomas hearings, many women's activists said that the all-male Senate Judiciary Committee simply "didn't get it." What did they mean by this? Would you say that Congress--and American society generally--"gets it" today?

(3) Why does the video link sexual harassment to smoking, animal rights, and abortion? What do these seemingly very different topics have in common? Can you think of others to add to the list?

(4) Despite increased awareness about the problem of sexual harassment, why is it proving difficult to reach a societal consensus on its definition?
