Discussion Questions

(1) What does the video suggest has been the key to changes in gender roles and the status of women over the past century? Which theoretical perspective in sociology seems most relevant to the analysis of why these changes occurred?

(2) What were the factors that eroded and challenged the 1950s ideal of feminine domesticity? Why did the women's movement emerge when it did?

(3) The video shows that the gains of women in previous periods have sometimes subsequently been reversed. Is there any reason to believe that the gains women have made in the last two decades or so are irreversible? What trends in U.S. society today are likely either to reinforce or undermine these gains?

(4) Has basic gender equality been attained in U.S. society today? What are the major continuing areas of controversy and struggle?

(5) Is there still a need for a women's movement? Or have women progressed far enough that they no longer need to be organized as a separate political force?
