MISSION:

      u    To provide freshmen with skills and knowledge that will contribute to
               their success in college at Rutgers.

       u To help students make the academic and social transition to college
 

GOALS:

     u To help students understand the differences between high school education
              and college education, and to understand the responsibilities of a college student

     u To help first year students develop their skills in academic writing and
              critical thinking

     u To develop students' sense of  intellectual curiosity and active involvement
               in the learning process

     u To develop and enhance student's discussion and oral communication skills

     u To provide a small class environment with opportunities for discussion,
               teacher-student interaction, and collaborative learning.

     u To create a sense of intellectual and campus community for new students.

     u To learn and practice the elements of library research

     u To use e-mail and Internet resources.

     u To encourage the mentoring of new students by the faculty
